After giving birth to a child, the writer Anna loses her place in the world. Still shocked after the birth, she moves with her Swedish boyfriend, Aksel, and their little son to Stockholm. Soon the couple must find themselves falling into old gender roles against their will, and a chasm opens between them. Anxiety threatens to engulf Anna, who reads too much news online and shops for too many clothes she can't afford. To stand against a threatening madness, she must read and write to fit in the world again.
In autumn 2020, Olga Ravn published her novel 'My work', which describes postpartum depression, and the following month she wrote in Politiken how the maternity area sacrificed women's psyches and bodies to have children. It set in motion an avalanche of testimonies from other women who finally put into words the hard sides of having a child as well as the horrible conditions of the delivery rooms.
